wikipedia:Mountain biking as a sport with designated bicycles has been invented in the 1970s in Colorado and California. At first, Gary Fisher and Joe Breeze modified 1940s Schwinn cruiser bikes to fit the purpose; those bikes were called Klunkerz. In 1977 Breeze built his Breezer #1, the first designed mountain bike.
